Fresh Production Manager (Johannesburg)

Babylonstoren is looking for a dynamic Fresh Production Manager to join our team in Johannesburg. We seek a highly motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can adapt to evolving market and organisational demands. The successful candidate will play a key part in expanding our fresh food product offering and must have proven experience in fresh food production, supplier management, and food procurement. Strong leadership skills are essential, as the role involves management of a cross-functional team.

Requirements:

• A BSc Agriculture or Food Science degree is preferred, or a tertiary qualification in logistics, procurement, fresh produce operations, or supply chain management.
• Minimum of five years’ hands-on experience in logistics, distribution, production or warehousing within the agricultural fresh produce industry.
• Experience in HACCP and non-conformance handling, and a proven track record of delivering excellent customer service.
• General knowledge of the agricultural fresh produce industry and an understanding of fresh products that are supplied.
• Knowledge of product packaging, including quality standards and ordering processes.
• Proven experience managing a team of 10 staff members (or more) would be beneficial.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and a working knowledge of Sage.
• Strong communication and writing skills in English and Afrikaans, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
• Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to work under pressure.
• Deadline- and target-driven.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

• Report to the National Fresh Produce Manager in Cape Town on a weekly basis.
• Process and expedite orders efficiently and accurately.
• Manage stock requests, ensuring clear communication with depot personnel to maintain minimum stock levels.
• Participate in stock takes, monitoring fresh produce and packaging stock levels at the Babylonstoren Depot.
• Oversee the financial system (Sage), ensuring accurate execution of procurement, assemblies, and sales orders, including monthly stock takes with count variance targets.
• Prioritise tasks effectively to complete daily responsibilities on time.
• Address and investigate customer complaints.
• Adhere to internal control policies and all relevant legislation regarding hygienic practices.
• Comply with internal and external safety guidelines.
• Source new suppliers (farmers, growers or materials) and establish grower contracts.
• Liaise with Babylonstoren Cape Town to optimise stock procurement.
• Manage the production team in line with company standards, ensuring productivity and desirable work ethics.
• Identify and implement process optimisation techniques to enhance productivity and yield.
• Cultivate strong partnerships with suppliers and stay informed about industry news, new products, and emerging trends.
• Oversee quality management, including documentation, non-conformance reporting (NCR), and waste management, with set targets.
