Blacksmithing: forge a hatchet (hand axe)

Guided by blacksmith Bradley, forge a solid steel hatchet by hand while learning the traditional techniques of the blacksmith’s trade.
R 2500 per person.
Blacksmith Bradley will guide you through the fundamentals of traditional blacksmithing, from lighting and managing the forge to achieving and maintaining the correct working temperature. You’ll learn essential forging techniques, including drawing out steel, punching holes and sharpening by hand, before heading home with a solid steel hatchet featuring a finely honed edge. All materials are included.
Held at the Workshop at Soetmelksvlei, a scenic working farmyard set in the late 1800s. The price includes farm entry, shuttle rides, refreshments, a hearty farm-style lunch in the Old Stables Restaurant, plus a beautifully crafted steel hatchet (hand axe) to take home.
