It was crucial in 1896 for isolated homesteads to have a fully equipped “first-aid box”. Despite the international popularity of Dr Williams Pink Pills (developed in Canada in 1886), in South Africa local traditional remedies were relied upon as hospitals were far away, and motorcars scarce.
This creative workshop gives an in-depth look into (and taste of) herbal concoctions, extractions, infusions and balms that are easy to make and safe to use, and would have made up the emergency kit for a regular home.
Following a short ride along the picturesque slopes of Simonsberg, we’ll descend towards the historical farmyard of Soetmelksvlei, which represents a time when life was simpler and craftsmanship was treasured. Here, herbal queen Gundula Deutschländer will guide us through the Soetmelksvlei garden and farmyard to find a cure in nature.
After a hands-on morning in the farm air, we’ll enjoy a hearty lunch at the Old Stables Restaurant before heading back to Babylonstoren.
