Advanced leathercraft: make your own wineskin

Guided by Soetmelksvlei’s master leathercrafter, craft a traditional leather wineskin by hand using heritage tools and time-honoured techniques.

After an introduction to the tools of the trade, Rouan will guide you through the process of preparing, marking, cutting and stitching leather using traditional handcraft techniques. You’ll create your own leather wineskin, also known as a bota bag, entirely by hand, learning the precision and patience that lie at the heart of this timeless craft. After lunch, you’ll complete the final details before heading home with a beautifully handcrafted wineskin slung over your shoulder.

Held at the Workshop at Soetmelksvlei, a scenic working farmyard set in the late 1800s. The price includes farm entry, shuttle rides, refreshments, a hearty farm-style lunch in the Old Stables Restaurant, plus a beautifully crafted, traditional wineskin to take home.
